“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”– Matthew 6:21
Your bank statement is a theology document. It tells the truth about what you actually believe matters, regardless of what you say on Sunday. Money is not evil, but the way we handle it exposes us like almost nothing else. Jesus talked about it more than heaven and hell combined, not because He wanted to guilt us, but because He knew how tightly we grip it.
Stewardship starts with a basic shift. It is not your money. It is God’s money, temporarily routed through your hands. That one sentence changes everything. You stop asking, how much do I have to give, and start asking, how much do I get to steward on His behalf? Generosity stops feeling like loss and starts feeling like participation in something bigger.
Practically, that means a budget. Not a chain, but a plan. It means giving first, saving second, and spending third – in that order, not as leftovers. It means getting out of debt that is strangling your freedom, and refusing to finance a lifestyle that only exists so other people will be impressed. Contentment is the quiet superpower no advertiser wants you to have.
This week, look at your last month of spending. Not to shame yourself, but to notice. Where did your money actually go? What does that reveal about what you treasure? Then make one change – increase giving, cancel a subscription, start a debt payoff plan. Small, consistent obedience with money compounds, in your account and in your soul.
Taking It Further
Knowing truth is only half the battle. Living it is where the rubber meets the road. So what does this look like in your life this week? It might mean having a hard conversation you have been avoiding. It might mean writing down a promise and reading it every morning before your feet hit the floor. It might mean simply pausing at the end of the day to ask one honest question: Did I walk this out today?
Scripture is a living word – and it changes lives when we put it into practice. Do not let today’s reading stay on the page. Let it travel with you into every conversation, every decision, every quiet moment. That is when the gospel stops being information and starts being transformation. And that is the kind of faith that is worth rocking on your sleeve – literally.
