“Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.”– Romans 12:13
Hospitality has gotten tangled up with entertaining, and the two are not the same. Entertaining is about impressing people with a spotless home and a plated dinner. Hospitality is about welcoming people into your real life, imperfect floors and all. One of them drains you. The other one heals both you and the person you let in.
The early church turned the world upside down partly because they opened their homes. They ate together, prayed together, and let strangers become family around simple tables. Nothing fancy. Bread, wine, conversation, shared burdens. That same pattern is still one of the most powerful ministries available, and it does not require a Pinterest account or a guest bathroom.
Your home does not have to be big or beautiful. It just has to be open. Invite the new family from church. Feed the college student who looks lonely. Let your kids’ friends hang around and eat your snacks. Order pizza if you are tired. The point is not the menu. The point is that people leave your house feeling seen and less alone.
This week, invite one person or family over. Keep it simple. Do not clean for three days or cook something you have never attempted. Just open the door, sit at the table, and be present. Hospitality is not about performance. It is about presence, and presence is almost always what the people around you are actually starving for.
Taking It Further
Knowing truth is only half the battle. Living it is where the rubber meets the road. So what does this look like in your life this week? It might mean having a hard conversation you have been avoiding. It might mean writing down a promise and reading it every morning before your feet hit the floor. It might mean simply pausing at the end of the day to ask one honest question: Did I walk this out today?
Scripture is a living word – and it changes lives when we put it into practice. Do not let today’s reading stay on the page. Let it travel with you into every conversation, every decision, every quiet moment. That is when the gospel stops being information and starts being transformation. And that is the kind of faith that is worth rocking on your sleeve – literally.
