“Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, ‘I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!'”– Mark 9:24
Many Christians panic the first time serious doubt shows up. You start wondering if the Bible is really true. You question whether you actually believe what you have said you believed your whole life. A little voice tells you that good Christians never doubt, so something must be deeply wrong with you. That voice is wrong. Doubt is not the opposite of faith. Indifference is.
The father in Mark 9 prays one of the most honest prayers in the whole Bible. I believe – help my unbelief. He is holding faith and doubt in the same sentence, and Jesus does not rebuke him. Jesus heals his son. The presence of doubt does not disqualify you. The direction of your doubt does. You can doubt your way closer to Christ or away from Him, depending on how you handle it.
Healthy doubt asks real questions and goes looking for real answers. It reads serious books. It talks to mature Christians. It prays honestly instead of pretending. Unhealthy doubt refuses every answer, isolates itself, and uses questions as an excuse to quietly check out. The first kind deepens faith over time. The second kind slowly erodes it. You get to choose which one you are practicing.
If you are wrestling with doubt right now, do not do it alone. Tell a trusted Christian friend or pastor. Read a thoughtful apologetics book alongside Scripture. Pray honest prayers, even if they start with I am not sure I believe You are there. Take your questions seriously and take your soul seriously. Faith that has been tested and has survived doubt is stronger than faith that never asked anything hard.
Taking It Further
Knowing truth is only half the battle. Living it is where the rubber meets the road. So what does this look like in your life this week? It might mean having a hard conversation you have been avoiding. It might mean writing down a promise and reading it every morning before your feet hit the floor. It might mean simply pausing at the end of the day to ask one honest question: Did I walk this out today?
Scripture is a living word – and it changes lives when we put it into practice. Do not let today’s reading stay on the page. Let it travel with you into every conversation, every decision, every quiet moment. That is when the gospel stops being information and starts being transformation. And that is the kind of faith that is worth rocking on your sleeve – literally.
