Godly Dating: Red Flags and Green Flags from a Biblical Perspective

Dating as a Christian in 2026 is a strange mix of apps, coffee dates, and confusion. It is easy to settle because you are lonely, or to obsess because the clock feels loud. Before you figure out whether this person is the one, you have to figure out whether you are asking the right questions in the first place. Compatibility matters, but character matters more.

Green flags are not about chemistry alone. They are about a person whose walk with Christ is real even when you are not watching. They serve their family well. They handle conflict without manipulation. They take responsibility for their own sin without dragging you into theirs. They are moving somewhere with their life, and they make you want to follow Jesus more, not less.

Red flags are easy to rationalize when you like someone. A harsh temper behind closed doors. Secret habits they will not discuss. A faith that only shows up for your benefit. An unwillingness to submit to anyone or any wisdom outside themselves. Pay attention. Infatuation lies. Your future self is begging you to notice what your present self keeps explaining away.

Before the next date, write down three non-negotiables rooted in Scripture – not preferences, like height or hobbies, but real character markers. Shared faith. Integrity. A willingness to grow. Hold dates to those. You are not being picky. You are being stewarded. The person you marry will shape the rest of your walk with Jesus. That is worth being slow about.
