“And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.”– 2 Timothy 2:2
Spiritual growth was never meant to be a solo project. Paul had Barnabas pour into him and then poured into Timothy. That chain – someone ahead of you, someone beside you, someone behind you – is not optional equipment for the Christian life. It is how faith actually travels from one generation to the next, and how the rough edges in you get slowly sanded down.
A Paul is someone further along in the faith who you give permission to speak into your life. Not a guru. A real person who prays for you, asks hard questions, and tells you the truth when you would rather hear flattery. You do not need a celebrity pastor. You need one faithful older believer who will actually pick up the phone when you call.
A Timothy is someone you are pouring into. Maybe a younger coworker, a new believer, a kid in your youth group, your own child. You do not need to have it all figured out to mentor someone. You just need to be a few steps ahead and willing to turn around and walk with them. In fact, discipling someone else is one of the fastest ways you grow.
This week, identify one name for each role. Who could be your Paul? Reach out and ask if they would meet with you once a month. Who could be your Timothy? Invite them to coffee and start praying for them regularly. You will feel underqualified for both seats. Everyone does. Do it anyway. The whole church moves forward when ordinary believers take that risk.
Taking It Further
Knowing truth is only half the battle. Living it is where the rubber meets the road. So what does this look like in your life this week? It might mean having a hard conversation you have been avoiding. It might mean writing down a promise and reading it every morning before your feet hit the floor. It might mean simply pausing at the end of the day to ask one honest question: Did I walk this out today?
Scripture is a living word – and it changes lives when we put it into practice. Do not let today’s reading stay on the page. Let it travel with you into every conversation, every decision, every quiet moment. That is when the gospel stops being information and starts being transformation. And that is the kind of faith that is worth rocking on your sleeve – literally.
