“But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.”– Luke 5:16
Somewhere along the way, a lot of us were taught that a good Christian says yes to everything. The committee, the favor, the last-minute babysit, the emotional dump from the same person for the fifth time this week. You swallow your discomfort, smile, and quietly burn out. Then you wonder why following Jesus feels like slow suffocation instead of abundant life.
Jesus said no all the time. He left crowds who still wanted healing. He withdrew to pray when people were hunting Him for miracles. He refused to perform on demand. He answered some questions and ignored others. He was the most loving person who ever lived, and He also had the clearest sense of His mission. Those two things are not in conflict. They are connected.
Boundaries are not walls against people. They are fences around your calling. When you say yes to everything, you usually end up resenting the people you said yes to and shortchanging the ones who matter most. A thoughtful no is often more loving than a guilt-ridden yes, because the yes was never really yours to give.
This week, look at your calendar and your obligations. Find one thing you said yes to out of guilt rather than calling. Practice saying a kind, firm no – no long apology, no overexplaining. Just, I cannot do that right now, but thank you for thinking of me. You are not being selfish. You are being honest, and honesty is the foundation of any real yes later on.
Taking It Further
Knowing truth is only half the battle. Living it is where the rubber meets the road. So what does this look like in your life this week? It might mean having a hard conversation you have been avoiding. It might mean writing down a promise and reading it every morning before your feet hit the floor. It might mean simply pausing at the end of the day to ask one honest question: Did I walk this out today?
Scripture is a living word – and it changes lives when we put it into practice. Do not let today’s reading stay on the page. Let it travel with you into every conversation, every decision, every quiet moment. That is when the gospel stops being information and starts being transformation. And that is the kind of faith that is worth rocking on your sleeve – literally.
