Listening for God: How to Discern His Voice Among the Noise

“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.”– John 10:27

You have probably wondered if God still speaks, and if He does, how you can tell it is actually Him and not your own anxiety wearing a robe. That question is not a sign of weak faith. It is a sign that you take Him seriously enough to want to get it right. Jesus said His sheep know His voice, which means hearing Him is possible, but it is also learned.

The primary way God speaks is through Scripture. Anything you think you hear from Him will never contradict what He has already said in the Bible. That is your first filter. If a thought pushes you toward something Scripture clearly calls sin, or pulls you away from love, humility, or holiness, it is not the Shepherd talking, no matter how spiritual it feels.

Beyond Scripture, God uses wise counsel, circumstances, and that quiet inner nudging that believers have called the still small voice for centuries. These rarely shout. They usually whisper, and they tend to repeat. The same idea keeps surfacing. A specific person keeps coming to mind. A verse keeps jumping off the page. Pay attention to patterns, not just moments.

This week, practice listening. Open Scripture slowly. Put the phone down. Ask a simple question: God, what do You want me to see today? Then sit in the quiet. Write down anything that comes to mind, and hold it up against His Word. Over time, you will learn His voice the way you learn a close friend’s – by spending enough time with Him to recognize it anywhere.

Knowing truth is only half the battle. Living it is where the rubber meets the road. So what does this look like in your life this week? It might mean having a hard conversation you have been avoiding. It might mean writing down a promise and reading it every morning before your feet hit the floor.
