Overcoming Burnout: How to Recover When You Have Given Too Much

“The angel of the Lord came back a second time and touched him and said, ‘Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.'”– 1 Kings 19:7

Burnout does not always announce itself. It creeps. First you are tired in the evenings, then you are tired on the weekends, then you find yourself crying in the car for no obvious reason, or snapping at people you love, or dreading things you used to enjoy. You are not weak. You are running on fumes, and fumes cannot carry anyone forever, not even Christians who think they should be able to.

Elijah burned out right after one of his greatest ministry victories. He ran into the wilderness, asked to die, and fell asleep under a tree. God did not rebuke him, did not give him a pep talk, did not send him back to work. God fed him. Twice. Then let him sleep more. Then spoke to him gently. That story is in the Bible partly so you would know your burnout is not a spiritual failure.

Recovery starts with honest rest. Not a weekend. Real rest. Sleep. Food that is actually nutritious. Walks. Time with people who fill you up rather than drain you. It also means saying no to things, even good things, until your tank has something in it again. You are not a machine. Machines can run without rest for a while. You cannot, and pretending otherwise is what got you here.

This week, identify one thing you are doing out of guilt or obligation that is draining you, and let it go or pause it. Schedule real sleep. Eat like a person who wants to live. Tell someone you trust that you are burned out, out loud, so they can pray for you and walk with you. Healing is rarely instant, but it is possible. God restored Elijah. He can restore you too.

Taking It Further

Knowing truth is only half the battle. Living it is where the rubber meets the road. So what does this look like in your life this week? It might mean having a hard conversation you have been avoiding. It might mean writing down a promise and reading it every morning before your feet hit the floor. It might mean simply pausing at the end of the day to ask one honest question: Did I walk this out today?

Scripture is a living word – and it changes lives when we put it into practice. Do not let today’s reading stay on the page. Let it travel with you into every conversation, every decision, every quiet moment. That is when the gospel stops being information and starts being transformation. And that is the kind of faith that is worth rocking on your sleeve – literally.
