“Then he said to them, ‘Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.'”– Luke 12:15
Most of us are drowning in stuff we barely remember buying. Closets packed with clothes we do not wear, drawers stuffed with cords to devices we threw out years ago, subscriptions bleeding money every month for things we do not use. Consumer culture promised that more would make us happy. Instead, most of us feel vaguely overwhelmed, and a little ashamed, every time we open the garage.
Christian minimalism is not about aesthetic white walls or bragging about how little you own. It is about recognizing that every object you bring into your life asks for a slice of your time, attention, and soul. The more you own, the more you manage. And if you are constantly managing, you have less bandwidth to love God, love people, and rest.
Decluttering is a spiritual discipline. When you pick up an item and ask, do I need this or am I just keeping it out of fear, scarcity, or identity, you are doing soul work. When you give away what you do not need, you are practicing trust. God can provide again if you ever actually need it. Letting go of things loosens the grip they had on you.
This week, pick one drawer, one shelf, or one closet. Empty it. Keep only what you use or love. Donate the rest without a second round of negotiation. Notice how the physical space feels lighter, and how your mind does too. Then ask what else, in your schedule or relationships, needs the same honest clear-out. Make room. God tends to fill what we are brave enough to empty.
Taking It Further
Knowing truth is only half the battle. Living it is where the rubber meets the road. So what does this look like in your life this week? It might mean having a hard conversation you have been avoiding. It might mean writing down a promise and reading it every morning before your feet hit the floor. It might mean simply pausing at the end of the day to ask one honest question: Did I walk this out today?
Scripture is a living word – and it changes lives when we put it into practice. Do not let today’s reading stay on the page. Let it travel with you into every conversation, every decision, every quiet moment. That is when the gospel stops being information and starts being transformation. And that is the kind of faith that is worth rocking on your sleeve – literally.
