Decision Making: How to Seek God’s Will When Facing Big Life Changes

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”– Proverbs 3:5-6

Big decisions tend to freeze us. Should you take the job, move the family, end the relationship, have the surgery, go back to school? The weight can feel paralyzing, partly because we treat God’s will like a hidden needle in a haystack, as if one wrong move ruins the plan. That picture of God is stressful, and it is also not biblical.

God is not playing hide-and-seek with His will for your life. He is a Father guiding His child, not a riddler. Most of His will is already clearly revealed in Scripture – love Him, love people, walk in holiness, pursue wisdom. Within those fences, you usually have freedom. The question is not always what, but how, and who you are becoming as you choose.

Practical discernment looks like four things moving together. Pray honestly about the decision. Soak in Scripture and see if anything applies. Seek counsel from mature believers who know you well. And pay attention to circumstances, open and closed doors, without treating every red light as a prophecy. When those four line up over time, you have confidence, not certainty – and confidence is enough.

Whatever you are deciding right now, slow down. Write the options out honestly. Pray over each one. Ask two or three wise people to weigh in without telling them what you want to hear. Then take the next faithful step and trust God to redirect if needed. He is able to correct a moving ship. He cannot steer one that refuses to leave the harbor.

Taking It Further

Knowing truth is only half the battle. Living it is where the rubber meets the road. So what does this look like in your life this week? It might mean having a hard conversation you have been avoiding. It might mean writing down a promise and reading it every morning before your feet hit the floor. It might mean simply pausing at the end of the day to ask one honest question: Did I walk this out today?

Scripture is a living word – and it changes lives when we put it into practice. Do not let today’s reading stay on the page. Let it travel with you into every conversation, every decision, every quiet moment. That is when the gospel stops being information and starts being transformation. And that is the kind of faith that is worth rocking on your sleeve – literally.
