“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast.”– Ephesians 2:8-9
Most of us, if we are honest, still believe somewhere deep down that we have to earn God’s love. We read our Bible and feel closer to Him. We skip a morning and feel like He is a little disappointed. That quiet performance treadmill is exhausting, and it is also a lie. Grace means the scoreboard was torn down before you ever stepped onto the field.
If you could earn your salvation, the cross was overkill. Jesus did not die to fill in the gap between your effort and God’s standard. He died because the gap was infinite, and because God refused to let you stay on the wrong side of it. Grace is not God grading on a curve. It is God putting Christ’s perfect record in your file.
This changes how you obey. You do not read the Bible, pray, or serve to get God to love you more. He already does. You do those things because you are loved, not so that you might be. The motive flips from fear to gratitude, and gratitude never burns out the way performance does.
Today, try to notice the moments you slip back into earning mode. Catch yourself when you feel more loved on your good days and less loved on your bad ones. Then preach the gospel to yourself again. Christ is enough. You are accepted. Rest in that, and then go live like someone who cannot be fired from a family they were adopted into.
Taking It Further
Knowing truth is only half the battle. Living it is where the rubber meets the road. So what does this look like in your life this week? It might mean having a hard conversation you have been avoiding. It might mean writing down a promise and reading it every morning before your feet hit the floor. It might mean simply pausing at the end of the day to ask one honest question: Did I walk this out today?
Scripture is a living word – and it changes lives when we put it into practice. Do not let today’s reading stay on the page. Let it travel with you into every conversation, every decision, every quiet moment. That is when the gospel stops being information and starts being transformation. And that is the kind of faith that is worth rocking on your sleeve – literally.
